Poppins to Callas
Her name is as old as the calendar: Mary. Through the centuries her name has sounded, without sacrificing strength. From mother to glory: Mary's kept coming and going. Maria Callas, Mary Poppins, Bloody Mary without Mary history is lacking. She was muse for many composers. Palestrina, Schubert, Rodgers & Hammerstein. Our Ladies of Wishful Singing bring them all together in the program What about Mary, in which Mary determined each tune. Because let's face it: without Mary there would be no Sound of Music.
In this musical performance several colorful Mary's pass in review: Mary the mother, the loving wife, but also Mary the jump-in-the-field, the disrupting schemer or just the thinking, inquiring Maria. Even varied and capricious as life itself in which women constantly are 'switching' parts, pursuing them, perfecting them, but also willing to play all roles simultaneously. Mary as a modern role model cannot avoid stress-choice and the better multitasking. In short, an interesting clash of Mary's. Sung and articulated in ancient, recognizable forms, and fresh new musical encounters and crossovers.

Stage director Annechien Koerselman has created a fabulous theatrical performance with modest means. The by mother the woman ironed tablecloths change into nun dresses, a red scarf turns into a sexy string. Household objects provide the percussive accompaniment of 'Lady Madonna' by The Beatles. To speak with Leonard Bernstein: "The most beautiful sound I ever heard, Mary."

Yesterday I attended the prepremiere of "What about Mary": finally a real feminine program, worthy, funny, fragile, soft and strong, musical, seductive. I think very quickly something should appear in the media aboout this, to show us what true womanhood is about. Highly recommended !!!
This really is a concert not to be missed! Theater pur sang with heavenly voices, sharp texts, a smile and a tear. A "must see" for all strong, confident, insecure and struggeling women (and for the tough guys who want to see and hear strong women ?)! So if you can get tickets, do so !!!
What makes it very strong is that you really made an 'act' out of it and not just sang beautifully, individually you are very different types, yet again together very good. [...] The clothing was perfect and even atmospheric
I loved it, chrystal clear and it looked very nice, firmly staged !! Great
I thoroughly enjoyed this varied program and your beautiful voices. Thank you very much! And good luck with this tour!
It was a wonderful concert! Fresh, cheerful, sometimes subdued, sometimes a little naughty, but all in a musical and vocal high level which can only make one very happy! Thank you for that!

On November 9, 2019 Wishful Singing has also launched a CD of What about Mary . This came into being thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign. The CD contains largely the same repertoire as the theatrical concert and has been supplemented with repertoire that the singers both musically and in terms of life wisdom also connected to the figure of Maria. So one will hear work of Hildegard of Bingen and Maurice Duruflé as well.
Wishful Singing asked Annechien to write the introduction of the CD, which gave the stage director the title Viva Maria!
The CD ‘What about Mary?' is available in the webshop of Wishful Singing and through Spotify and ITunes.
